Sibling chair

Fereday, George and Fereday, Tom (2024) Sibling chair. [Artefact]

Abstract

The Sibling Chair is a furniture collaboration between brothers George Fereday (London) and Tom Fereday (Sydney). George is an academic specialising in natural materials and Tom is an industrial designer. The chair was commissioned by the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, as a limited edition for the newly opened Castle Hill building – a storehouse for the museum collection, supporting research and conservation. As a national institution, the brief was to design a lean, comfortable, occasional chair from locally sourced Spotted Gum, that expressed both the character and properties of the timber. The distinctive triangulation in the chair’s structure allows for optimisation of material and efficiencies in manufacture, by celebrating the timber’s exceptional toughness and beauty.
