Abstract
The UK Government’s hesitant and contradictory stance on the wearing of face coverings can be understood as reflecting an adherence to the tenets of ‘nudge’ theory; it also highlights the neoliberal ideological stance critiqued in Foucault’s notion of Governmentality, and the ‘responsibilisation of the self’ evident in contemporary liberal democracies such as the UK.
