Jeremy Collins is the editor for the sixth section which is related to the legacy media and social media’s online news services. In developing a critical account of the issues facing ‘news’ and journalism in the digital era, the section begins by adopting Blumler’s conception of a ‘two-legged crisis’ for journalism, which acknowledges the economic pressures faced by legacy newsmakers while also emphasising the issue of ‘civic adequacy’ which is more a long- term issue for journalistic practice, preceding the digital era (Blumler, 2011, p,25). While legacy media have struggled to find viable responses to the economic pressures, the civic questions which have emerged in journalism research since at least the 1960s have in some ways received less attention. Issues of voice, regulation, representation, trust and bias continue to bedevil journalistic activity in the digital era; for instance, the use for instance of agenda setting, information subsidy, and the emergence of the producer-consumer in news production contexts have been seen by some as ameliorating,, and by others as exacerbating, these concerns.
