Abstract
As the war in Ukraine enters its fifth year, Russia is introducing increasingly draconian legislation, tighter censorship and punitive measures to suppress dissent and control information. Its latest restrictions, including rolling internet blackouts, blocking WhatsApp, and threatening to close Telegram completely, have disrupted millions of Russians, damaged the economy, and exposed cracks in its censorship apparatus. Despite the crackdown, Russians are devising ingenious ways to circumvent the state suppression of news and content.
