Clossick, Jane (2023) Ethnographic mapping in London: lecture for TU Berlin 2023. In: SPACETIME MATTERS Lecture Series, June/July/August 2023, Technische Universität Berlin (online). (Unpublished)
This presentation introduces ethnographic mapping as a methodology for exploring urban complexity through lived experience. Based on fieldwork in Tottenham, North London, it combines graphic anthropology, participant observation, and multi-scalar spatial analysis - from city blocks to interior thresholds. The concept of urban depth is developed to describe the architectural, social, and economic layering of city life, while depth structure offers a framework for interpreting how zones, boundaries, and levels of decorum influence access, movement, and interaction. Drawing on examples such as local businesses, religious spaces, and civic environments, the research reveals how the built environment mediates visibility, inclusion, and exclusion. The approach underscores the ethical responsibility of architects and planners in understanding the lived realities of urban space, particularly in contexts of regeneration. Ethnographic mapping is presented not only as a research tool but as a creative and political act that illuminates the hidden structures shaping everyday urban experience.
