Abstract

The Spaces of Birth and Death project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between architects, philosophers, clinicians, and creative practitioners, aimed at rethinking the design of spaces in which the beginning and end of life occur. Through a series of exploratory workshops held in London and Glasgow, the project investigates how architecture, ethics, and human experience intersect in birthing suites, neonatal units, hospices, and hospital wards. Participants explored the psychological, sensory, and spatial dynamics of birth and death, considering how environments affect autonomy, dignity, and relationships. The workshops highlight key themes such as spatial thresholds, object agency, cultural safety, and institutional power. This initiative moves beyond legalistic or purely ethical framings to develop a situated, relational, and deeply human understanding of life’s transitional spaces. The project aims to inform future architectural and policy design through grounded knowledge exchange and participatory methods.
