Abstract

The period 1900-1921 was one of intense creativity and productivity in the field of European enamelling which saw unprecedented numbers of women studying, teaching and creating works in this very technical medium. However, apart from a few pieces by well-known designers, enamelling has remained relatively unexamined. This article offers an analysis of some of the themes and techniques utilised in creating the enamels and the glimpses they can give us of the lives, ideas, practices and beliefs of the women who designed and made them. It highlightsnworks by both acclaimed and lesser-known women artist-designers from Britain, Ireland and France which are in a private collection of European enamelled panels in the United States. In looking at these objects as works of art in their own right, it attempts to begin rectifying the lack of research on enamels created by women at this time.
