Infrared spectroscopic studies of some esters of inorganic acids

Butcher, Frank Kenneth (1964) Infrared spectroscopic studies of some esters of inorganic acids. Doctoral thesis, Northern Polytechnic.

Abstract

In the present work a number of esters and some of their complexes are examined, and, from the assignment of their spectroscopic absorption, conclusions are made as to the factors influencing the structure and/or bond strengths. Tabulated in the text, where no recent reviews are available, are correlation data for general organic-metallic compounds and wore specific details can be found in the relevant chapters.

The structure of some new dialkyltin dialkoxides and bis-(8-quinolinate)dialkyltin (IV) compounds are proposed with help from a study of some new dialkyltin dihalides.

A number of new sulphur esters are studied and, from the assignments, some previously suggested frequency relationships are examined using solution data to yield a more accurate linear relationship. A numerical order of inductive effects for the various groups attached to the >S02 group is evaluated from the spectroscopic results and, using this, a relationship is deduced for the estimation of the S = O frequency of X2SO2, if the P = O frequency of X3PO is known.

Some new alkyl phosphate, arsenate, and vanadate complexes with various Lewis acids are studied as an extension of some earlier work with boron trichloride in this department. It is shown that the 1:1 complexes are formed by co-ordination through the oxo-oxygen atom, and not the alkoxyl-oxygen. The order of donor and acceptor strengths are related to the spectroscopic results.

The spectra of a number of branched-chain N-alkyl S-halogenoborasoles are correlated with the proposed structures for the simple halogenoborasoles made in this department. Hyperconjugation of the alkyl groups with the conjugated borasole ring is proposed as a possible explanation of the position of ring stretching frequency.

Structures for some arylboron esters formed by the interaction of catechol and arylboron dihalides are proposed after reference to the spectra of some arylboron halides.
