Abstract

The methods of preparation of alkyl (aryl) boron halides have been critically reviewed, as have also those for the preparation of symmetrical tetraalkyl (aryl) tin compounds.

The interaction of inorganic halides with symmetrical tetraalkyltin compounds has been the subject of a critical literature survey.

Using normal bench techniques it has been shown that alkylboron dihalides, dialkylboron halides and trialkylboron compounds can be obtained on a large scale from the interaction of tetraalkyltin compounds with boron trihalides by varying the molecular proportions; the dialkyltin dihalide was obtained in all these reactions.

The alkylboron dihalides have been used to prepard ethyl dialkylboronates, B-trialkylborazoles, 2-alkylbenzoles, 3-dioxa- 2-boroles, and a new series of heterocyclic compound, viz., the 2-alkyl [2,3-d] naphtho-l,3-dioxa-2-boroles. A series of diethanolamine alkylboronates were prepared from diethanolamine and crude boronic acids, which were obtained from the alkylboron dihalides. Two dialkyl ethylborinates were prepared from the appropriate dialkylboron halide and ethanol.

The dialkyltin dihalides have been used to prepare a series of 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives, and a series of dialkyldialkoxytin compounds, as well as two dialkyltin oxides, and two dialkylstannanes. Several alkyltin trihalides were obtained by a mutual replacement reaction. The infrared spectra of several B-alkylboron esters and dialkyldialkoxytin compounds have been discussed. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of some boronate esters, dialkyltin dichlorides and dialkyldialkoxytin compounds are also discussed.
