Lambert, Gordon Maurice (1963) The precipitation from homogeneous solution of compounds of tin. Doctoral thesis, Sir John Cass College.
The shortcomings of existing gravimetric methods for the determination of tin have resulted in referee methods all employing a volumetric procedure. A new gravimetric method employing the technique of precipitation from homogeneous solution has been devised. Complexing and demasking agents for Sn(IV) have been examined, and a cation release method has been evolved in which the Sn(IV)-oxalate complex is slowly decomposed with bromate in acid solation containing iodate, which enhances the quality of the precipitate.
From solutions of high acidity a new species containing Sn(IV) and iodic acid was obtained which has been studied by quantitative and infra-red analysis. The application of the new gravimetric method to solutions containing metals commonly encountered in tin alloys has also been studied.
Anomalies were encountered in the complexes of Sn(IV) with K.D.T.A. described by other workers and are referred to in the text, and a novel product from the system Sn(IV)-bromate-oxalate-S-hydroxyquinoline was obtained and is described in an appendix.
