Reactions of some porphyrins and their metal complexes

Abstract

A brief review of the properties of porphyrins and their metal complexes is presented, with special emphasis on the relative stability of metalloporphyrin complexes.

The first recorded demetallation of metalloporphyrins in a basic medium is described, and is shown to be more effective than the usual acid demetallation method. The new method has been used to determine the relative stability of a number of metalloporphyrin complexes both with respect to the metal and the ligand. Several mechanisms for this reaction have been investigated and a number of other demetallation systems discovered while so doing are described.

The reduction of porphyrins by a number of methods has been investigated.

Improved methods for the preparation of octaethylporphin, and the palladium and platinum complexes of porphyrins are described.

The spectra of metalloporphyrins have been studied in a variety of solvents and the results are discussed in terms of further coordination.
