Abstract

The necessity to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency has placed the UK's commercial office sector under increasing regulatory and environmental pressure. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a promising approach to enhance building performance and lifecycle sustainability. An inductive, PRISMA-guided systematic review of 40 peer-reviewed studies published between 2010 and 2025 examined how AI contributes to energy efficiency and carbon reduction across the design, construction, and operational phases of UK commercial office buildings. The review shows that AI is most established in the operational phase, where it supports predictive maintenance, adaptive control, and real-time performance optimisation.
However, adoption remains constrained by high costs, poor data quality, legacy infrastructure, interoperability issues, and skills shortages. In response, the study proposes a RIBA-aligned conceptual lifecycle framework positioning AI as an integrative enabler of sustainability across the building process,
