Newman, Gerald Alan (1962) The infrared spectra and structures of some inorganic complexes involving mono and bidentate ligands. Doctoral thesis, Sir John Cass College.
A range of metal-sulphite compounds have been prepared and their infrared spectra examined. Assignments of these spectra and their deductions concerning the structures of the complexes have been made by comparison with previous information on the sulphite ion. The three classes of sulphite compounds investigated were: double salts, and mono- and bidentate sulphite complexes. With one exception, all monodentate sulphite complexes contain a metal-sulphur bond.
The preparation and infrared spectra of a range of metal-diamine complexes are also reported. The ligands used in this investigation were ethylenediamine, and the cis- and trans- isomers of 1:2 diaminocyclohexane. Examples of metal-ethylenediamine complexes containing the ligand as a 'bridging' group or having polymeric structures, as well as the more usual chlorate complexes have been found. The infrared spectra of cis- and trans- 1:1 diaminocyclohexane complexes indicate similar behaviour of these diamines to that found with the corresponding ethylenediamine complexes of the same metals.
