Dunstan, W. J. T. (1962) Properties of photoconductive materials. Doctoral thesis, Northern Polytechnic.
Two main topics are treated: certain aspects of the properties of the coloured alkali halides, in which photoconductivity is due to the optical excitation of electrons from traps, and the behaviour of an illuminated germanium p-n junction in a magnetic field; in this material, increased conductivity is due to band-to-band transitions. Attempts to measure the thermal activation energy of coloured potassium chloride by two different methods are described; in addition, an account is given of the production of absorption bands in potassium bromide by the admixture of various negative ions. A discussion of the phenomena of electrolytic coloration and bleaching is included. Experimental results on the photovoltaic effect in a germanium p-n junction, illuminated parallel to the junction plane, and placed in a magnetic field, are given; these show that there is a change in response only if the magnetic field exceeds a certain critical value. In a theoretical discussion, a possible explanation of the effect is indicated. In two appendices, simple treatments of the basic properties of energy bands in solids and of the derivation of the statistical mechanical distribution laws are outlined.
