Abstract

The method of precipitation from homogeneous solution by cation release from metal-EDTA complexes constant pH has been investigated. The breakdown of the metal by with hydrogen peroxide, and the release of cations in the absence of oxidising agents have been studied. Consideration has been given to the use of other ligands and alternative oxidising agents. In the absence of oxidising agents an approximate relation ship has been found to exist between the apparent stability constant of the complex, the solubility of the precipitate, and the ease of breakdown of the metal-complex. In the presence of oxidising agents the technique has been found to give satisfactory results with a number of metal ions, but the method is not selective, and is not suitable for use in the separation closely similar metals. In most cases improved precipitates were obtained although with certain very insoluble compounds the precipitates were finely divided and not suitable for analytical purpose.
