Ellison, George T. H. (2011) Epidemiology and public health. Doctoral thesis, London Metropolitan University.
The work selected for submission in support of this application for a DSc in Epidemiology and Public Health spans 15 years and reflects the application and further development of the applicant's academic expertise in the analysis of biological and social determinants of health. This ranges from work in physiology, through nutrition, maternal and child health, and inequalities in health, to lifecourse epidemiology and applied health services research.
The applicant has therefore organised the material under four main themes:
- maternal and child health;
- inequalities in health;
- lifecourse epidemiology; and
- health services research;
with an additional theme devoted to the interdisciplinary methodological syntheses in epidemiology and public health contained in the three published collections the applicant has edited to-date.
Linking each of these five themes run three analytical strands:
- interdisciplinarity;
- methodological innovation; and
- a focus on the socially-constructed nature of the scientific 'facts' these produce;
with a commentary that describes the academic career path through which each theme relates to the others, and that provides evidence as to why the work submitted:
- is considered to be of high distinction;
- constitutes an original and significant contribution to the advancement and application of knowledge; and
- establishes the application as a leading authority in epidemiology and public health;
augmented by the inclusion of citation indices in the Reference list (see under point 4, below) for each of the published papers covered by the Science Citation Index, and by reference to published book reviews for each of the three volumes included therein.
