This account is divided into two parts. The first part discusses some general problems of scintillation counters with particular reference to the use of plastic phosphors as scintillation material. The experimental results obtained with a plastic phosphor scintillation counter are given and the design and properties of a large area plastic scintillation counter are discussed in detail.
The second part describes the present state of knowledge concerning the energy-loss of relativistic singly-charged heavy particles and the experimental results so far obtained. An experiment is then described in which an attempt is made to measure the variation of the most probable energy-loss of μ mesons with energy in organic material using the large area counter. Finally the problems involved in the development of larger counters are discussed.
