Booker, Charles J. L. (1958) The structure and some electrical properties of anodic oxide layers on aluminium. Doctoral thesis, Sir John Cass College.
The structure and electrical properties of porous oxide layers on aluminium have been studied with special reference to the operation of a capacitance-resistance hygrometer.
A review of the literature on the structure is followed by a consideration of investigations with the electron microscope. A new technique is described which reveals the pore structure in greater detail than before, and estimates of the dimensions of the structure are made. The results are discussed in relation to those of other workers.
Experiments based on the measurement of capacitance and resistance as a function of time and frequency, to determine the relationship of the electrical properties of the layers to the anodizing conditions used in their formation, are described. The results are discussed on the basis of a theory proposed by Jason and Wood. It has been possible to explain the variation of the electrical properties with relative humidity in terms of the conductivity of the pore surface. Tentative hypotheses are made on the mechanism of pore conduction and aging which is a characteristic property of these porous layers.
