Organic boron-oxygen ring systems

Abstract

An historical review of the interaction of boron-containing compounds with polyhydroxy compounds is given together with work connected with systems involving a tetravalent boron atom.

The interaction of boron trichloride with ethylene glycol in different stoicheimoetric proportions has been studied and the results obtained interpreted in the light of knowledge obtained from past studies of mono-hydroxy systems. Ethylene by orogen borate (CH20)2B-OH is possibly the first of a series of boron compounds isolated which contains a free hydroxy group attached to a boron atom which is joined only to alkoxy groups; compounds of the class (R0)2B0H never having been previously isolated. There emerges in this study the remarkable thermal stability of the five-membered boron-oxygen ring system - C,O, C, O, B - though such compounds are easily hydrolysed. The action of hydrogen halides on such a system is considered. Data are given suggesting that diborates in this system have an "open"- structure rather than a cage structure.
