Abstract

The problems considered are those of continuous but non-normal loading on thin flat plates of various shapes.

After an introduction in which the validity of the usual expressions for the bending and twisting moments is examined for this type of loading, the separate cases of (i) long rectangular, (ii) finite rectangular, (iii) parallelogrammic, and (iv) circular plates are considered in detail.

In (i) the solution is shown to reduce to an expression involving the Airy integral and allied functions, tables of all of which have been computed by various authors, except Bi(x) which is given in the appendix.

In (ii) and (iii) the problems are solved for the case where two opposite edges are simply supported, various boundary conditions being considered on the other two edges.

(iv) is solved in cylindrical polar coordinates, and a solution is given for the deflection at any point on a particular radius.

While the latter problem is of mainly academic interest, the other three have applications to a variety of practical problems.
