The thesis presents an account of the syntheses and properties of new bensopyrans (coumarin and umbelliferone derivatives), benzothiapyran 2-ones benzopyran-2-thiones, and benzothiapyran-2-thiones, which have reactive methyl groupings in the 4-positions, and the use of these compounds as nucleophilic intermediates for the preparation and study of a novel class of non-ionic polyene dyes which have the characteristic amidic chromophore associated with merocyanines.
The Theoretical Sections include a review of inceptive and related chemistry of the merocyanine dyes. A discussion of some theoretical aspects of the nucleophilic reactivity of certain coumarin and related compounds, which also postulates a mechanism for the reaction by which the dyes are formed, precedes a critical discourse on the chemistry of and possible synthetic routes to the required intermediates. A section has been devoted to a detailed discussion upon the relationship between light absorption and constitutions of the dyes and intermediates; spectral absorption data is included.
