While a considerable amount of work has been done on the conductivity of electrolytes in mixed solvents this has, with the exception of very early work, been largely confined to symmetrical electrolytes. Only a very limited amount of transport number data in mixed solvents is available for electrolytes of any type.
In the present work the conductance and transport numbers of five salts of widely different valency type have been determined in acetone-water mixtures.
An early falling boundary apparatus of MacInnes has been reinvestigated and found to be very satisfactory for work where a high degree of precision is not required.
The extrapolation methods of Owen and Shedlovsky for conductance results and of Shedlovsky for transport number results have been shown to be applicable to solutions in acetone-water mixtures.
The results have been discussed from the point of view of the dielectric constant and viscosity of the solvent and of the dissociation and salvation of the solute.
The apparent ionic radius as calculated from Stoke’s Law varies with solvent composition and it has been shown that this accounts for the observed variation of dissociation and transport numbers with solvent composition.
A theory which would explain the observed variation of the apparent ionic radius has been put forward.
