This study utilised a qualitative approach to understand the subjective experience of community safety unit (CSU) police officers' experiences of working with survivors of domestic abuse (DA). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four Metropolitan Police (MPS) officers who had experience working at CSU. The data was analysed using Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), identifying three super-ordinate themes: Metropolitan police in the past, Metropolitan police in the present and the impact on the self. The participants disclosed challenges they experienced with the organisational processes and structures, such as high workloads, increased sense of accountability and lack of mental health support. Despite the organisational challenges, the participants continued to feel motivated to work at CSU because of the valuable work they were doing to support survivors of DA. Furthermore, the interviews highlighted that there was a sense of mental health being under-reported and minimised in the interviews. Findings indicated that there is an increased need to focus on the mental wellbeing of officers, specifically focusing on psychoeducation, debriefs and an increased psychological presence at police stations.
