Defending the rights of persons detained pending extradition in the light of ECHR judgments

Tseytlina, Olga (2010) Defending the rights of persons detained pending extradition in the light of ECHR judgments. EHRAC bulletin (13). pp. 3-4.

Abstract

This article reviews the impact of recent ECtHR decisions in extradition cases emanating from Russia and Ukraine. Over the last two-and-a-half years the ECtHR has handed down a series of precedent judgments in extradition cases against Russia and Ukraine. These judgments should dramatically change law enforcement practice as the ECHR - as a legal instrument guaranteeing the protection of human rights - requires that its norms be interpreted and applied so that the guarantees are practical and effective.
