Conclusion: meaning-making through miscommunication and loss

Abstract

Sexuality, gender and embodiment are negotiated through language, in ways that reveal the cultural density of bodily vocabularies and the fluid, interactional nature of identity. Translation and ethnography engage with these negotiations, showing that both practices are embodied, value‑laden and shaped by institutional and ideological constraints. Particular attention is given here to carnal languages, the politics of terminology and the challenges of working with taboo and LGBTQ+ discourse, where claims to neutrality become untenable. By foregrounding the interplay between words, bodies and power, miscommunication, loss and reinterpretation emerge as productive sites for meaning‑making and agency across diverse cultural contexts.
