Abstract

The TANK Workshop is an interdisciplinary initiative that explores how branding and design can be leveraged to address health inequities in Black communities. Situated at the intersection of design education, health innovation, and community empowerment, the workshop offers a participatory framework that empowers non-designers, particularly those working in or affected by healthcare systems to engage with branding as a tool for cultural connection, narrative disruption, and social change.

TANK introduces accessible, low-barrier design methods to examine the relationship between identity, trust, and healthcare communication. The inaugural workshop focused on co-creating culturally resonant health brands, drawing on lived experience, diasporic knowledge systems, and critical design theory.

Participants engaged in speculative and practical design exercises that mapped the intersections of race, access, and institutional messaging. Outputs included concept-driven brand toolkits, visual narratives, and a collective critique of mainstream healthcare aesthetics. The workshop also provided a testing ground for integrating AI tools, participatory research methods, and inclusive pedagogies into a unified design-for-equity practice.

By positioning branding not as a commercial output but as a civic, cultural, and educational strategy, TANK contributes to emergent conversations around design justice, health equity, and the reimagining of public-facing communication. The workshop serves as both a teaching tool and a research method, advancing knowledge exchange between academic institutions, creative practitioners, and underrepresented communities.
