Commins, B. T. (1962) The spectrophotometric determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in polluted air. Doctoral thesis, Sir John Cass College.
This thesis is a study of the analytical techniques for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the use of specially developed techniques for the determination of these hydrocarbons in polluted air. Some studies of the pyrolysis of acetylene have been Included in an attempt to understand the mechanism of the formation of these hydrocarbons when they are produced in combustion processes, the effluents of which pollute the air. Techniques previously employed have been critically examines and modifications and improvements have been introduced. Particular attention has been given to the reliability in sampling methods and the stability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during collection analysis. The finally accepted procedures employed were alumina column chromatography and ultra-violet spectrophotometry and were applied to a study of atmospheric pollution by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of urban and rural areas and also to the examination of a number of important sources of combustion pollution.
