Afzal, M. (1962) Studies in heats of absorbtion of carbon black. Doctoral thesis, Northern Polytechnic.
The development of the fundamental theories of adsorption and of the heat of adsorption are traced from early times to the present. An account of the theory and method of measuring adsorption is given. The apparatus used and the method of calculating the adsorption results is described. The adsorption of Methanol, Methyl formate, Methyl Acetate, Methyl Cyanide, Acetyl Chloride, Acetaldehyde and Methyl Ethyl Ketone on Carbon Black has been measured at number of temperatures between 0° and 4o°c, and heats of adsorption at a number of temperatures and eoverages calculated from the resulting adsorption isotherms. It is shown that the isotherms obtained obey either a B.E.T. or a Freundlich plot. The beats of adsorption are shown to be generally consistent with the idea of two adsorption processes occuring simultaneously, one with a small activation energy and one with a larger activation energy. Certain unexplained results were also obtained.
