Bolton, Peter Dennis (1961) A kinetic study of the hydrolysis of some simple amides by a cation exchange resin. Doctoral thesis, Sir John Cass College.
A study has been made of the hydrolysis of a series of simple amides by a cation-exchange resin. Energies and entropies of activation of the reactions have been calculated, and compared, wherever possible, with those of equivalent homogeneous reactions.
By regarding the resin and surrounding liquid as separate homogeneous phases, an explanation has been advanced for the differences found to exist between the activation energies of the resin-catalysed reactions and those of an apparently equivalent homogeneous system. An extension of this concept enabled an equation to be derived which brings the results of this work into alignment with those of previous workers in the field of resin catalysis.
The effect on the rate of reaction, of variation in resin particle size, and of the nature of the composition of the reaction medium, have also been studied.
In addition, by a series of experiments, carried out under near-anhydrous conditions, the kinetic dependence of the reaction on the concentration, of water in the medium has been demonstrated.
