Aubrey, D. W. (1961) The chemistry of aminboron compounds. Doctoral thesis, Northern Polytechnic.
The formation of aminoboron compounds is discussed with particular emphasis on the chemistry related to the interaction of boron trichloride (1 mol.) with primary or secondary amines (6 mol.), normally affording triaminoborons (1 mol.) (B(NRR')₃) (R = hydrogen or alkyl or aryl) ; R' = alkyl or aryl) and amine hydrochloride (3 mol.). Certain secondary amines, however, formed only the diaminoboron chloride, (R₂N)₂BC1 (R = alkyl or aryl) under similar conditions, despite the presence of excess of secondary amine. The thermal condensation of compounds containing the alkyl (or aryl)-aminoboron- group, >B-NHR, affording borasoles, is described. Pyrolysis of the triaminoborons (B(NHR)₃ R = alkyl or aryl) was shown to afford B-triaraino N-trialkyl (or aryl)- borazoles (B₃(NHR)₃N₃R₃; R = alkyl or aryl), which on further heating formed polyborasoles, with elimination of primary amine. The tris(dialkyl or N-alkyl aryl-amino)borons, B(NRR')₃ (R = alkyl; R' = alkyl or aryl) did not decompose on heating under similar conditions. Certain of these compounds responded in an unexpected manner to nucleophilic attack (hydrolysis, alcoholysis, aminolyais), for which possible explanations are suggested. Interaction of some members with boron trichloride or boric oxide is also examined. Although bis(diisopropylamino)boron chloride, (Prₑ₂N)₂BCl, did not react with diisopropyl- or diisobutyl-amine, it did so with other primary or secondary alkylamines (2 mol.) or with primary (1 mol.) and tertiary (1 mol.) alkylamines, affording unsymmetrically substituted triaminoborons ((Prₑ₂N)₂BNHR' ; R = hydrogen or R' ; R' = alkyl). Possible explanations for the unexpected thermal stability of the bis(diisopropylamino) alkylamino borons ((Prₑ₂N)₂BNHR' ; R = alkyl) are proposed. Some differences in the hydrolytic stability of the bis(diisopropylamino) dialkylaminoborons are also noted.
