Interaction of silicon esters and inorganic non-metal halides

Abstract

The interaction of boron trichloride with alkoxysilanes has been studied in order to determine the dependence of the type of reaction on the electronic properties of groups attached to silicon.

In systems involving n-butoxy-, isobutoxy-, n-propoxy- and n-octyloxysilanes, silicon-oxygen fission occurs which leads to a mixed mutual replacement reaction.

Alkyl-oxygen fission leading to the formation of mixed anhydrides occurs in reactions of boron trichloride with alkoxysilanes containing strongly electron releasing groups such as s-butoxy-, isopropoxy- and 1-phenylethoxy.

Factors determining these two types of reaction are discussed. A review of the mixed anhydrides containing silicon is given.
