Abstract

A wide range of coordination compounds containing the ligands 1:4 dioxane, 1:4 dithiane, 1:4 thioxane, piperazine and di-N-methyl piperazine have been prepared and their infrared spectra examined. Comparison of these spectra with those of compounds of known structure has given information on the structures of the complexes prepared. It has been possible to prepare long-chain polymeric compounds in which the two hetero atoms of the ligand are coordinated to different metal atoms, and also to prepare compounds with ligands in "bridging” and chelate positions. An assignment of the observed infrared and Raman spectra to fundamental skeletal vibrations has been carried out for piperazine and 1:4 dithiane. In the later part of this work the infrared spectra of a range of complexes containing diolefins are reported. These spectra have given information on the structures of the complexes of 1:5 hexadiene, 1:5 cyclooctadiene and 1:3 butadiene complexes. An investigation of the infrared spectrum of 1:5 cyclooctadiene in both liquid and crystalline phases has enabled the structure of this compound to be elucidated. The relationships between the frequency of absorption peaks for various complexes and the stability of the compounds has also been discussed.
