There is a growing amount of literature on trans identity and experience. However, what appears to be lacking in the field of psychological research is the experience of those who are in relationships with trans individuals, especially when the trans identity is disclosed during the course of a long-term romantic relationship with a cisgender partner. This study centres on the experience of the cisgender partners and the analysis is underpinned by Butler's theory of gender performativity and further developed through Halberstam's conceptualisation of gender fluidity and experiences beyond the gender binary.
This qualitative research project used semi-structured interviews with six participants of varying ages and was analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Four significant themes were generated from the data. (1) The love that dare not speak its name, (2) The renegotiation of the self within an intimate relationship, (3) The emotional gains and the emotional cost, (4) A new identity and a place in society. The limitations of the current study are also discussed, and suggestions for future research are provided.
