The chemistry of aminoboronites and aminoboronates

Abstract

Three new classes of organo-boron compounds are described. These are the aminoboronites (RR'N)2B0R", the aminoboronates RR'NB(OR")2 and the aminohalogenoboronites RR'NB(OR")X. The preparations and properties of the first members of these classes are given, together with certain new tris-aminoborons and aminoboron halides ancillary to the main investigation.

The aminoboronites and aminoboronates prepared are colourless, easily hydrolysed liquids, the former being more stable to heat than the latter. Neither class co- ordinates with bases. The amino groups are replaceable by alkoxy or higher amino groups, or by chlorine. Boron trihalides react with both classes giving the dihalogeno- boronite and aminoboron dihalide. The aminohalogenoboro- nite shows some tendency to coordinate with bases.

Both boric acid and trialkyl borates are inert towards secondary amines. The general rule is put forward that while amino groups joined to boron can be displaced by reaction with alcohols or higher amines, alkoxy groups cannot be replaced with amines.
