Diphenylboronous acid and its anhydride have been prepared and their properties investigated. A representative series of alkyl and the phenyl diphenylboronites (Ph2BOR) were made in a number of ways, and the applicability of the various methods discussed. An investigation of the physical properties of the diphenylboronites has included a determination of the value of the atomic refractivity of boron in this type of compound; and certain novel features have been observed in the infrared spectra of diphenylboron. The study of the chemical properties of these compounds has included hydrolysis and dealkylation under varying conditions, and the action of phosphorus and boron chlorides and bromides to produce the corresponding diphenyl boron halides.
These halides have proved extremely useful reagents for the synthesis of a number of boron compounds. The halides did not, however, have any action on ethers, mercaptans or metallic sodium.
A study of the steric factors involved in the formation of amine and ammonia co-ordination complexes with borates B(OR)3, phenylboronates PhB(OR)2, and diphenylboronites Ph2BOR has been made.
Fission of the boron-carbon bond in various diphenylboron compounds has been brought about by a number of reagents such as alcohols, hydrogen and boron halides, bromine and borates. The possible mechanisms of these fissions are discussed.
