Abstract

The thesis falls into two parts, and after a general introduction dealing with the theoretical aspects of the chromatographic and spectrographic methods used throughout, each part is dealt with separately. In the first part, polycyclic hydrocarbons in atmospheric smoke are considered, and after a general review of the previous analytical work, the work done on the polycyclic hydro carbons is critically reviewed. A description of the new research follows, with full experimental details and the follow ing conclusions are drawn; (1) For the five compounds studied, the amounts of hydrocarbons per gram of smoke sample were found to be fairly constant in samples from large and small towns in this country, Scandinavian countries and Iceland. (2) The amounts of hydrocarbons actually present in a cubic metre of air, in any one place were found to depend solely on the amount of smoke, i.e. on the nature of the locality. (3) Studies showed that the amounts of hydrocarbons in the suspended matter are greater than those in the material deposited out of the atmosphere. (4) All the compounds previously reported were detected in the samples used, except chrysene, and three new compounds are reported. In the second part, polycyclic hydrocarbons in tobacco smoke are considered. A full description of the preparation of tobacco for smoking and a survey of the main constituents of the cured leaf are given, followed by a description of the smoking process and a list of compounds previously reported in tobacco smoke; a full account is given of the work on the polycyclic hydrocarbons. An account of the new research follows together with all the experimental details. For the first time, six hydrocarbons were detected in unsmoked tobacco and by studying a number of samples it was established that these compounds arise by contamination during curing and subsequent handling. By smoking the tobacco from which all the extractable constituents had been removed, it was shown that the hydro carbons originally present in the tobacco are probably destroyed and that the compounds present in the smoke from normal tobacco are products of the combustion process. Hydrocarbons were determined for the first time in cigar smoke and a study of the hydrocarbons in tobacco ash was carried out.
