Abstract

It has been found that mastication changes the melting point of raw rubber and affects its rate of freezing.

As a preliminary to investigating the mastication of vulcanised rubber the effect of temperature on the plasticity of raw and vulcanised rubber has been studied. The phenomena of reversion are discussed and experiments described to prove the autoxidative nature of the softening of vulcanised rubber at high temperatures. Finally it is shown that vulcanised rubber, like the raw material, may be permanently softened by mechanical working at temperatures sufficiently high to induce some reversible thermal softening. It is shown how this plasticisation of vulcanied rubber by hot mastication may be accelerated by catalysts.

A new method of reclaiming vulcanised waste rubber, based in these experimental obersvations, has been elaborated and the mechanism whereby oxidative degradation of raw and vulcanised rubber may be assisted by mechanical stress is discussed.
