Police services today, across the United Kingdom, face unparalleled and exceptional challenges. It can be argued that policing is more intricate than it's ever been. The traditional form of hierarchical rank structure may no longer be the most appropriate approach.
Research into leadership, police leadership and employee engagement looked into the most efficient way to motivate involvement to fulfil the demands, which have been largely overlooked in the police field. Motivations of police officers appear to be tied to their views of fairness, organisational identification, emotional connection, and a work-Iife balance.
A mixed method approach was designed to look at survey data already collected from over 3000 police officers around employee engagement and new research being carried out.
By bringing an understanding of engagement from theory to practice, this study could influence how police leadership training is designed. Making recommendations that if police leaders can make a habit and not just an act, they must do, by doing the right thing, then excellence can be won!
