Sunlight availability in urban areas

Abstract

In sunny climates, obstructions impair considerably the access to daylight by reducing the skylight contribution and sometimes blocking the access to sunlight. However, reflected sunlight from the obstructions or the ground can play an important role in the illumination of buildings, particularly in orientations and at times of the day where sunlight is not incident on the windows. Furthermore, obstructions and ground can redirect the light to interior surfaces other than the horizontal plane, and lead to a greater uniformity of the light inside the space.
This paper analyses the contribution of reflected sunlight to the illuminance on the facade of buildings in an urban canyon. The reflectance of surfaces in the illumination of buildings, in particular in sunny days, is addressed. Examples of the effect of non-flat surfaces to the luminance of facade are presented under a sunny and an overcast day. The effect of different canyon rations based on year cumulative illuminance derived from weather data is presented for Lisbon.
