Accelerating the adoption of digital and tokenised sovereign bonds in emerging and developing economies to fund climate action and sustainable development

Abstract

Emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs) face a triple challenge of sustainable investment gaps, capital flight and aid cuts. In this bleak environment, EMDEs must redouble efforts to mobilise domestic savings for local investment. This report presents six case studies of how states are digitising and tokenising their sovereign bonds to scale their financing capacity. Combining these platforms with thematic use of proceeds bonds offers the prospect of domestic resource mobilisation and increased investment into sustainable development.
