Weight-related conversations with patients: reducing stigma and promoting healthful change

Abstract

Weight management is highly relevant to primary care, and brief interventions are encouraged. Although patients generally respond positively, healthcare professionals often feel reluctant to raise the issue of weight for a variety of reasons, including time restriction and fear of inadvertently damaging relationships with patients. To avoid this, messages about weight (verbal, non-verbal and environmental) must be considered, and people-first language should be used. Analysis of recorded conversations about weight with GPs in primary care suggest a number of helpful strategies to protect relationships with patients, manage time effectively and encourage attendance at local weight management programmes. This article explores these strategies and outlines potential sentences or phrases which may be useful in this context.
