In: Advancing modern methods of construction in Africa: an investigation of prefabrication practices in Nigeria. Routledge. (In Press)
Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) have the potential to revolutionise the construction industry in Africa by addressing challenges of inefficiency, low productivity, and quality inconsistencies. This chapter focuses on adopting prefabrication as a key component of MMC, using an African contextual lens to explore trends and challenges.
The chapter investigates prefabrication technologies' knowledge and implementation levels among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that dominate sub-Saharan Africa's housing sector. Using a quantitative research approach, descriptive and inferential statistics were used to examine the differences in the knowledge and application of prefabrication technologies among various professional groups.
Findings reveal critical knowledge gaps, barriers to implementation, and opportunities for scaling prefabrication practices, which are essential for increased MMC adoption. Evidence-based insights into optimising prefabrication to enhance construction processes in emerging economies.
Focusing on Nigeria, the chapter offers pragmatic and strategic directions for advancing MMC adoption across Africa, promoting economic growth, sustainability, and innovation in the region's construction sector.
