Fereday, George (2022) Mixed deciduous beam. [Artefact]
Abstract
This timber beam prototype demonstrates how structural building products might be made from overlooked hardwood species that are otherwise burnt as wood fuel. The beam was designed to stimulate use of locally grown hardwoods in construction, increase rates of woodland management and promote new markets for hardwood that store sequestered carbon long-term, in buildings. Made as part of the V&A and Sylva Foundation’s Field Notes Summer School 2022, the beam uses minimal processing steps to ensure that it is low cost to produce.
